How To Build Your Own House

More and more people dream of building their own house rather than simply buying another boring property. But how do you go about creating your own humble abode. In the UK, very few people actually go through with building their own home, but that’s not to say it isn’t possible to do so.

If you choose to go down the self-build route, there are several options open to you. In each case you will need to first buy your own plot of land that you are able to build a residential property on.

– Kit houses – There are many kit house companies cropping up on the market, offering a variety of different styles to choose from. From traditional log cabins to modern pods, the choice is yours. Generally you will need to arrange to have the foundations laid in advance. Once the kit arrives, you can either erect it yourself, or have the kit house company or contractors do it for you.
– Self-build – This is the romantic notion that many of us have when thinking about creating our own house. You’re responsible for the majority of the process, from design to construction, though you may hire contractors for the jobs you’re not sure about.
– Contractor built – If your construction skills are somewhat lacking but you still want to design your home, you can simply pay builders to construct your dream home for you.

How Long Does it Take?

The exact figure varies depending on location, building style and the amount of work required. At a rough estimate, most self build projects take around two years from planning to moving in. Half of this time is spent acquiring the relevant planning and construction permissions, as well as securing suitable contractors. The actual construction of the house depends on the type of land and the type of building, as well as weather. If all goes well, around six months is fairly normal.
